Are people who use marijuana thinner than those who don’t? Though scientists can’t say conclusively that smoking pot makes you thin, a recent study shows a correlation between smaller waist circumference and marijuana use. Users not only seem to be thinner, but also somewhat healthier than their non-using counterparts. An exact reason for the trend hasn’t been discovered, but scientists are still intrigued by the results of the study.
More than 4,600 people participated in the study. Waist circumference and other weight-related factors were assessed in those who currently are marijuana users, those who used but don’t anymore, and those who never used. Other studies had found lower prevalence for obesity and diabetes in marijuana users, but this was the first study to also include tests for insulin, glucose and insulin resistance.
When studied, those factors led to some of the most surprising results. As researchers looked at the weight related factor, many significant differences were noted among the participants based on their marijuana usage. BMI, insulin levels, insulin resistance,glucose levels and waist circumference were all lower in current marijuana users when compared to those who used in the past or never had. The results of the study are impressive, but scientists have yet to determine the cause, and whether the results were in fact caused by marijuana use.
It is hoped that further research into the subject will be able to determine whether the differences found by the study are a direct result of marijuana use. If a direct correlation is found, scientists will then look into what exactly about marijuana affects people in this way. The study also notes that with the recent trends toward legalizing marijuana, doctors should be aware of what impact it can have on the body as more and more patients may come in having used it in some capacity.

A joint study recently released by two Universities recently provides new insight into how cannabis impairs memory. They discovered that habitual use of cannabis impairs memory in lab rats. The scientists dosed rats with the descriptively named WIN 55,212‐2 cannabinoid and they began struggling to identify and remember objects.
Universidade de Lisboa in Portugal and the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom conducted the study. They looked into the long-term effects of cannabis consumption for new insights into reducing the side effects of cannabis. After analyzing the data, they recently published their results in the Journal of Neurochemistry.
The peer reviewed paper is part of a new wave of research looking into the effects of cannabis. It is part of a larger initiative to uncover the mysteries hidden in cannabinoids and our own bodies. Habitual Use May Pose Risk
The study found that rats dosed with WIN 55,212‐2 didn’t recognize objects they had previously seen. But the drug didn’t affect their motor functions or anxiety level. Brain tissue tests also showed structural changes in brain regions important to memory and cognition.
This means that heavy or habitual use can have long-lasting impact on users. Most people understand that cannabis impairs memory. But this is one of the first times that scientists have proven the link between cannabinoids and memory.
The discovery adds to what we know about cannabis interacts with the functional mechanisms in the brain. It also sheds new light on the importance of the serotonin system in processing cannabinoids. This is one more step forward for patients suffering from a variety of diseases that affect memory.
Cannabis isn’t perfect
Despite the claims of hippies and spiritualists, cannabis can provide negative side effects. Not everyone wants to be blazed while using cannabinoids. Many patients prefer CBD instead of THC because it doesn’t produce a noticeable “high”. Finding a way to counteract the high could allow high THC consumption without the normal negatives.

The author claims we should consider the downsides of therapeutic cannabis use and try to find ways to address them. America is in the middle of a trade war and foreign powers are fighting back with new tariffs. Recently announced tariffs proposed by president Trump are poised to make importing some manufactured goods from China more expensive. But the move sparked political and economic backlash with more tariffs announced in response.
The escalating trade war against China and other countries is about to hit cannabis consumers with higher prices. Modern cannabis consumers increasingly rely on vaping devices, batteries, filters and cartridges. Higher import taxes mean higher prices when checking out at the vape shop.
Heavy vapers could see significantly higher prices in the coming months for consumables manufactured in other countries. But the longer the trade war wages on, the more consumers are going to feel the pinch. Nobody understands this better than Arnaud Dumas de Rauly, the Co-CEO of Blinc Group.
Companies walk a fine line
Dumas de Rauly has a long list of clients looking for vaping hardware. His company sells technologies and products related to vaping nicotine and cannabis. There is also his incubator program that helps develop, research and brand tech for the vape industry.
The vape research, development and branding company Blinc Group CEO recently testified that the policies put in place by the Trump White House will impact consumers. Dumas de Rauly testified as part of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative public hearings. The hearings specifically deal with the new tariffs and their impact on American businesses.
In his testimony, Dumas de Rauly claimed that the proposed tariffs would have consequences beyond simply higher consumer costs. He pointed out that “25% of sales come from cannabis vaping products”. In 2017 Colorado collected $247M in cannabis taxes and the increased cost could lead to decreasing sales and less income for the states.
The cuts go deep
It’s more than just the people making and selling vaporizers that will feel the impact of the new tariffs. Consumers should feel the squeeze every time they go to the shop. But shop owners also need to prepare for increased prices on the supply side and reductions in consumer demand.
Since the tariffs target Chinese imports, anyone who relies on cheap foreign goods to do business is going to feel the pinch. Higher prices and lower demand for everything from carrier services to accounting and cell carriers will put additional strain on the market and could negatively impact consumer confidence. If it doesn’t right itself, the market can get into a death spiral that reduces access to all but the wealthiest.
The full impact of the new tariffs will only become apparent after they go through. A heavy response from China could deepen hostilities, increasing import costs further. It also isn’t clear if this is the limit of sanctions the U.S. and China intend to impose or if more will follow. If relations continue to chill, it could put spell doom for many entrepreneurs and small businesses that rely on vape sales.

New Theory Magazine visualizes the recent sales of legal marijuana in America with the release of the new infographic. How big is the market for legal marijuana in America? A lot bigger than some would have ever imagined. According to Fortune, “a new report by a leading marijuana industry investment and research firm found legal cannabis sales jumped 17%, to $5.4 billion, in 2015 and they will grow by a whopping 25% this year to reach $6.7 billion in total U.S. sales.”

Although Fortune reports that “well-established medical pot markets in states like California still account for much of the country’s legal marijuana sales,” ArcView says that “recreational marijuana sales is expected to help fuel the cannabis market’s soaring growth over the next few years.”
“It projects that adult-use pot sales will account for more than half (53%) of the overall market by 2020,” Fortune explains, adding, “that would represent growth of more than 1,150% for recreational sales over the next four years.”

Which Drugs Are Most Popular?
Cannabis is by far the most commonly used drug worldwide, according to the latest Global Drug Survey (GDS). Cocaine and MDMA are used to a far lesser extend in comparison. The figures used here do not consider alcohol, tobacco or caffeine, which of course are also heavily used. Also, the GDS seeks out younger respondents more involved in drug use. Their overview therefore concentrates on people likely to use drugs than the general public.
The mean age of the surveyed population in the 28 countries covered was 29.1 years, while 46.7 percent of the respondents were under 25 years of age and 47.6 percent went clubbing at least every 3 months. GDS also asked more men (68 percent) than women (32 percent) for their survey.

The States Where It's Legal To Smoke Marijuana
At the beginning of July, Vermont became the ninth U.S. state to legalize recreational marijuana and adults are permitted to possess up to 1 ounce of the drug as well as two mature and four immature plants. Vermont joins other states including California, Massachusetts, Maine, and Nevada where votes were passed to green light recreational marijuana in late 2016. That doubled the number of states where lighting up was permitted with Colorado, Alaska, Washington and Oregon all previously legalizing the green stuff. In terms of consumption, California has a massive market for recreational marijuana, larger than Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska combined.

There May Well Be Some Benefits of Medical Marijuana, Session Admits
Marijuana is one of the most widely used drugs the world over. This is especially true among the younger generation, despite it being illegal in most nations. In the U.S, some states have yet to legalize marijuana us, causing a bit of confusion among American citizens. Worse yet, U.S Attorney General Jeff Sessions had recently gone on record to support the use of medical marijuana, when he had previously been dead set against it. Let’s take a look at how he came about his decision.
Sessions’ View
On April 25th, 2018, Sessions went before the Senate Appropriations Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Subcommittee panel and acknowledged that indeed there are some benefits from medical marijuana. He went further to support the appropriateness of studying cannabis for medical uses. Many were a little taken aback as the Attorney General had previously gone on record to say that he did not believe that medical marijuana was a medicine.
During his speech, Sessions admitted having seen research indicating lower overdose deaths in states that allow marijuana use. However, he was fast to criticize the current use of cannabis, suggesting that it is not being used for medical purposes. This is not too shocking as indeed younger people seem to be using it more especially in states where marijuana use is legal. A recent poll on the matter asserts this claim as it found out that one in four young adults uses cannabis every so often.
Additionally, Sessions indicated that steps to license more marijuana growing entities would soon be taken. However, he had some conditions for this as they would be for marijuana research only. Also, he did not give a timeline on the same, raising some questions on his end game.
The Confusion
In 2016, the DEA enacted a policy that was intended to license more marijuana research growers. Since then, the agency has received at least 25 applications but has yet to act on any of them. According to the Washington Post, this delay has been caused by top Justice Department officials who stepped in to prevent DEA from approving them.
However, one can sympathize with Sessions’ dilemma as, during his answers to the Senate committee, he admitted that allowing the research would expose the U.S to the risk of violating international drug treaties. Furthermore, he seemed hesitant to give an actual timeline as he considered that most people who take medical marijuana do not have a prescription for it. In his view, it is just another excuse to get high within the confines of a medical prescription.
Advocates of marijuana being legalized were pleasantly surprised at his new stand. Considering that he had previously worked against their beliefs, this came as a good shocker. However, they urged the Justice Department to act on allowing cannabis research and broadening policy changes sooner. In their defense, they supported that marijuana does indeed help many patients, and the recent drag in research was a great hindrance to patients’ health.
Justin Strekal, NORML Political Director, told Marijuana Moment that what Americans needed was better research on consumer marijuana as well as lawful policies for legal markets. During his interview, he pointed out that the continued deliberations from the DoJ were affecting over two million registered medical marijuana patients in the legal markets.
In his testimony, AG Sessions told the subcommittee that the priority of drug agents and federal prosecutors was heroin, cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine, and not cannabis. However, he stated that if indeed cannabis agents ‘were illegally acting and violating federal law,’ their agents would work on that case.
Sessions remain opposed to the idea that cannabis is helping to address the U.S opioid addiction crisis. He still does not think that it is safe to use medical marijuana, which may indicate why his office is slow in giving a timeline for the research program to kick off. Despite studies showing that legalized medical cannabis has caused a reduction in opioid overdose, Sessions believes that this development will not be sustained in the long run. However, he acknowledged this and even asked his staff to look further into the matter, as he views science to be very important in combating drug addiction.
Many are confused as to how U.S Attorney General Sessions will tackle the research of medical marijuana. This is as a result of his change of heart in the matter, yet research is still on hold. However, patients of medical grade cannabis can rest assured that his changed views on the matter are the right step towards more research. It will take some time though.
